Dear Cattlemen & Cattlewomen,

I hope everyone has survived the winter and is ready for a great summer. The sun is shining and the grass is growing. Our field day is coming up May 17th & 18th at the Wilson County fairgrounds, in the Q- barn. Everyone needs to begin getting items to sell at the auction. This is the only fundraiser we have for the year. It helps pay our junior members more premiums at our shows and keep our association going. Everyone who has not paid their dues needs to send them to Mr. Mike Davis or bring them to field day. We will have a meal on Friday night before field day. If you plan to come eat on Friday night, please let me know by May 10th, so we will know how much food to prepare. My number is 615-642-0976. The schedule for Saturday is as follows:

  • Judging Contest- 9:00 am
  • Board Meeting- 10:00 am
  • Guest Speaker- 11:00 am
  • Lunch- 12:00 am
  • Auction- 1:00 pm
  • Show begins- 2:00 pm

Katie Smith, our junior advisor, wanted me to remind everyone that any young lady who is interested in participating in the TN Charolais Princess competition needs to have her entry form in by May 1st.

We look forward to seeing everyone at field day!

Sincerely,
Mike Watkins

The TN Beef Agribition dates are March 8th and 9th, and the Junior show is Sunday the 10th. We will have our banquet on Friday night at 6:00 pm in the Q building (the same building as last year. August 1, 2018

Dear Cattlemen and Cattlewomen,

I hope everyone has had a great summer so far. It’s that time of year again, time for our state show. Our state show will be at the Wilson County Fair on Aug. 25th at 7:30 p.m. You need to be there at least 2-3 hours before this time to enter in. There are many other shows going on at the same time as the Wilson County Fair. However, for the junior members, this is a show the board has voted to pay premiums on. So, you won’t want to miss it.

Also, it’s time to think about new officers for 2019. If anyone would like to serve as an officer, please contact Mike Watkins or Mike Davis. We will have a board meeting at our state show at 4:30 p.m. in the “Q” building.

Tennessee was represented well at Junior Nationals this year. Please read below for the Junior National report from Katie Smith.

Attendees included: Eliza and Gracie Weiberg from east TN who showed one cow each, participated in showmanship, and quiz bowl. From west TN, William Thomas Maupin and Walynn Maupin who showed one cow each, participated in showmanship, basketball, quiz bowl, and team fitting contest. Katie Smith showed two cows, participated in showmanship, team fitting contest, and photo contest. Taylor Cantrell did not show, but participated in the fitting contest, photo contest, speaking contests, and quiz bowl. All juniors attended the mentor programs and all other scheduled events to learn and meet new people. Tennessee also won the herdsmanship award for keeping there are clean and neat throughout the week which couldn’t have been possible without the help of the help of the adults there. This included Mr. Ross, Dru & Leanne Smith, Barry Maupin, Cheyenne, Mrs. Turner, Stacy and Randy Weiberg. They also brought two juniors with them that did not show and were just there to help the girls.  They were John Rogers and Makenzye Stoots.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the Wilson County Fair!

Sincerely,
Mike Watkins

Dear Cattlemen & Cattlewomen,
I hope everyone is doing well. Spring has finally sprung, maybe??? We will have our field day May 18th & 19th in Dyersburg, TN. Our members in West Tennessee always do a great job planning events. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy the food, fellowship, & cattle, as well as bring items for the auction. Please remember this is our major fundraiser for the year. It helps us provide funds for some of our youth at various shows and money for those who attend Junior Nationals. Rooms are available at the Hampton Inn (731) 285-4778.  We will have a board meeting at 10:00 a.m. If anyone has anything you would like to discuss, feel free to attend or call me, and I will share at the meeting. Don’t forget the Appalachian Classic Sale is coming up June 2nd. If anyone hasn’t paid your dues yet, please send to Mr. Mike Davis as soon as possible.

Thank you,
Mike Watkins

Dear Cattlemen & Cattlewomen,
First of all, I would like to thank Mr. Mike Davis and his wife Mrs. Libby for the great job they have done for the Tennessee Charolais Association over the past four years. I hope no one is expecting me to try to fill those shoes. I hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday season, and everyone is well. We are trying to make some plans for the 2018 year. If anyone hasn’t talked with Mr. Clifford Mitchell about consigning cattle to the Tennessee Beef Agribition, please contact him as soon as possible. Mr. Mitchell’s number is (405) 246-6324 or call me at 615-642-0976. The Tennessee Beef Agribition will be March 9th & 10th with the Junior Show on Sunday, March 11th. We are also discussing a feeder calf sale/bull sale somewhere in Tennessee this year in order to sell animals which are not consigned to a registered sale or kept as replacements animals. I would like to have a meeting at Ryan’s Restaurant in Lebanon (where we meet at during Agribition) on January 27th at 12:00 p.m. to discuss this sale, field day, and any other Charolais business. All members are welcome to come join the discussion.
In closing, if I can ever be of any help to anyone, please feel free to give me a call (615) 642-0976 or email me at lwffarm01@aol.com.

Members, Breeders, Friends and Guests,

I would like to reflect on what a successful field day we had and to make plans for our membership meeting and Charolais show at the Wilson County Fair.

Our Field day was a huge success and the facilities at the Smith County Agriculture Center were wonderful and we had several top notch heifers to show.  Drake Warren won the blue ribbon with Collette Turner as reserve.  The final total for our auction was $5,457.50 as we owe thanks to many people, but especially to Tommy Turner and his family for hosting our event. Not only did Tommy donate a heifer for the auction but he also spearheaded all the plans and did all the groundwork for the food and the show.  Thank you again Tommy.

Coming up soon is the Wilson County Fair on Saturday August the 26th.  Our membership meeting will be at 4pm and the Charolais show will be at 7:30 pm all Central Standard Time.  We will be having our meeting in the new building near the back of the fairgrounds. If you have any questions please let me know and thank you all for your support.   I hope you see you all there on the 26th.

Contact me at 423-489-9302 if I can help.

Thank you,

Mike Davis
President

Members, Breeders, Friends and Guests,

I want to take this opportunity to reflect on our Agribition show, sale and Membership meeting. We also need to start making plans for Field Day. The Agribition sale had a good set of cattle. The sale grossed approximately $83,000 with a sales commission of 12.75%. Angel Kirk of the Dyer county FFA showed the grand champion bull and the grand champion female was consigned by Kade Mitcham.

The membership meeting drew an overflow crowd this year and it was great to see all the interest we have in the Tennessee Charolais Association.  Katie Smith and Haley Brazel, were this year’s winners of the T K Watkins Memorial scholarships.  Dale Young of Indian Ridge Charolais, was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Lynn Hankins as board member for East Tennessee. Cranston Webb, has asked to be replaced as board member for West Tennessee and his replacement will be named at Field Day.

We have approximately 40 adult members and 20 junior members and if you have not paid your membership dues, please mail your check Dr. Richard Clark,
P.O. Box 9, Tazewell, TN 37879. Juniors need to be members to receive checks from the association for shows at Field Day, 4-H expo and Wilson Co. Fair.
Field Day will be June 9-10 at the Smith County Agriculture Center at 159 Ag. Center Lane, South Carthage Tenn. This is 5 minutes from the Carthage exit
off of I-40 with the schedule being as followed:

Tommy Turner, will be donating proceeds from a heifer calf born 9-7-2016,  its registration number is  F1236439 and we will lead off our benefit auction with this beautiful halter broke heifer and you can call Tommy at 615- 683- 7828 for more info about the heifer. We will need all members to bring some items for the auction as all items, donations and gift certificates are greatly appreciated. We will need a successful auction in order to continue our support of all our juniors at the shows mentioned above and the junior national show. Thanks for your support and please come join us and let’s have a great Field Day.

Contact me at 423- 489- 9302 if I can help.

Tennessee Charolais Association Members, Breeders and Friends,

With Christmas fast approaching, I would like to wish everyone a joyous holiday season from our family to yours. 2016 has brought many highs and lows in the cattle business. Prices have ranged from very high to very low. However, as an organization our membership is higher than it's been in several years. Our junior participation was very good at shows and field day was just exceptional.

Several plans are under way for our 2017 season, and to start I am enclosing a 2017 membership form. Fees are $25 for adults and $10 for juniors and you only need to use one form for all family members. Once you have completed the form you will need to mail it to:

Tennessee Charolais Association
PO Box 9
Tazewell, TN 37879

The Tennessee Beef Agribition is going to be March 10th and 11th. The Charolais show will be that Friday and the sale on Saturday. Clifford Mitchell of Mitchell Management, is going to be the sale manager this year. If you have possible consignments please contact Clifford at 405-246-6324 to make plans. You will need to
get this done early so we are able to get an early catalog. I have reserved rooms at the Comfort Suites in Lebanon at 615-443-0027 until February 23rd. The room rates will be $99.95 plus tax and they are listed under Tennessee Charolais. You will be able to reserve a room for Friday night or Friday and Saturday night.
Our Membersnip meeting along with committee meetings and audits will be that Friday, March the 10th at Ryan's Steakhouse, 405 S. Cumberland Ave. in Lebanon. Dinner will start at 7 pm central time and we have the large room in the back reserved. Everyone is welcome so please come out and join us and take part in the
meeting. Also, this year Mike Watkins has announced that two T.K. Watkins Memorial Scholarships will be awarded at our meeting on March 10th. Please contact Kellie Watkins Porter at 615-417-7574 to get more information about the scholarships and how to apply. Caroline Turner was the 2016 recipient and the Watkins family was happv to increase the scholarship from one to two this year.

Field day this year will be June 9th and 10th at the Smith County Agriculture Center. This is a beautiful facility only 5 min. from I-40 at the Carthage exit. We are already making plans for this event and I will give out more information after the Agribition.

To all members, thank you for a great 2016 year and please remember to renew your membership for 2017 vear. Greetings to my Charolais Friends:
I hope everyone has a joyous holiday season and a happy New Year, 2015 was an exciting year with record high cattle prices. Lower prices toward the end of 2015 leaves question marks for 2016. Here’s hoping springtime will bring a rebound in prices.

  • President: Mike Davis
  • Vice President: Mike Watkins
  • Secretary/Treasurer: Richard Clark
  • Board Members:
    • East Tennessee: Silas Maxwell, Lynn Hankins, and Shellie Reaves.
    • Middle Tennessee: Tommy Turner, Lindsay Bertling, and Kevin Brazel.
    • West Tennessee: Lynsey Butler, Jerry Maupin, and Cranston Webb.

I look forward to working with our officers and having a successful year. Our finances are solid, so this gives us opportunities to promote our breed.

Mike Davis, President

Greetings Tennessee Charolais Members, Breeders, and Friends:

I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. We recently enjoyed an exciting Field Day. Many thanks to Mike Watkins and his family for hosting our Association. Extra thanks to Connie, Kellie, and Kristie for all their hard work. They are the heart and soul behind Mike Watkins and their dedication to Tennessee Charolais is greatly appreciated. Again, many thanks to the Watkins family.

Field day was very successful. We had nine juniors show cattle. There was fun and games and a chance for friends to just catch up. Our auction went well. Thanks to all who furnished items or purchased items. Thanks to Bob Morton and Mike Watkins for securing semen donations for the auction. Thanks to Richard Ross for managing the junior show. Everyone in attendance seemed to enjoy the festivities. Thank you for supporting Tennessee Charolais in any way!

Our business meeting at Field Day included two items that need attention. Dr. Richard Clark was appointed by the board to serve as secretary for the remainder of 2015. Any business items should be mailed to him at: P.O. Box 9, Tazewell, TN 37879. We appreciate Richard accepting this appointment. The second item was a motion to change our By-Laws from term limits to yearly elections. Members will receive more information by mail with this letter.

Our next meeting will be at the Wilson County fair in Lebanon, TN on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the small building at the back of the fairgrounds. This is where we have met previously. We tried to secure a more meeting friendly building but none were available. Considering the size of the fair, I decided it was better to meet near the fair barn than to move offsite. I realize this is not the most meeting friendly building. We have this building from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please try to attend. Items on my agenda are By-Laws, nominating committee, and Agribition.

Thanks again to everyone for supporting Tennessee Charolais. I hope to see you in Lebanon, TN on August 22, 2015 at 4:00 p.m.

Mike Davis, President
Tennessee Charolais Association

P.S. Reminder
Meeting 4:00 p.m.
Junior Show 7:30 p.m.

Greetings Tennessee Charolais Members, Breeders, and Friends:

Here’s hoping everyone has moved into Spring time and looking forward to a prosperous Summer. Our Association had our Spring meeting in Lebanon during the Beef Agribition. The President, Vice-President, Secretary and six Board Members along with many other members and guests were present. Two topics highlighted the meeting; Agribition & Field Day. As a Charolais breeder, we should all be disappointed that we were not able to have a show and sale because of lack of entries. Plans are underway already for 2016. We have a sales committee exploring our options to ensure we make Agribition 2016. Bill Baird is Chairman of this committee. If you have ideas, comments, suggestions, or can help in any way please let Bill or myself know.

Our second major topic was Field Day. Field Day is June 5-6 at Mike Watkins Little W Farm in Lebanon, TN. The address is 2655-A Beasleys Bend Road. Mikes cell number is 615-642-0976. All of this information and more details are on our web page. Mike has lots of activities planned. This shapes up as one of the best Field Days Charolais has ever had. Please bring your family and friends and join us. We will have free food, games, contests, and much more. Please remember our auction. This is our major fundraiser for 2015. We ask each member to bring at least one item to donate to the auction. Any donation or items from supporting businesses will be appreciated. Call me if you have any questions or if I can be of help in any way (423-489-9302).

Mike Davis, President
Tennessee Charolais Association

We just finished our Charolais show at the Tennessee State Fair in Lebanon, TN. We had 17 junior exhibitors and approximately 25 head of Charolais cattle. Haley Brazel and her heifer won the grand championship. It was an exciting night and a lot of great competition. All the juniors deserve a great deal of thanks from our membership for their hard work and dedication to our breed. Pictures and other winners will be on our website.

I would also like to reflect on our membership meeting held prior to the show at the Wilson County Fairgrounds. It was noted that we had a very successful field day in June and now seem financially stable once again. Mike Watkins presented us with a $1000 check from the Tennessee Beef Agribition. This was in addition to our proceeds from the Agribition sale.

In addition to the 17 exhibitors at the state fair, we had 7 exhibitors at the 4/H Expo in Murfreesboro. The membership voted to reward each with $50 for their participation. We truly appreciate the interest our juniors have in showing Charolais cattle. Thanks again to them and especially to their parents and friends.

Dr. Richard Clark explained updates to the webpage and other ideas he has for our site. Any news, pictures, etc. about our association and membership should be sent to Dr. Clark at volunteer1971@yahoo.com. We plan to have regular updates so please continue to visit our site. Other updates and ideas will be coming soon.

I have appointed Haley Brazel as junior representative. She is going to coordinate junior communications and be responsible for getting pictures and show results and other news to Dr. Clark for our webpage. Our thanks to her for accepting this appointment. I know she is excited and will do a great job.

Nominations were made for next year's officers:
President - Mike Davis
Vice-President - Jimmy Hester
Secretary - Cindy Brazel
West TN Director - Tim Duncan
Middle TN Director - Tommy Turner

Any other nominations must be sent to secretary Cindy Brazel by certified mail and received by October 15 to be eligible. Only paid members are allowed to participate. We had a very good meeting with a lot of interest in our association. I appreciate each and everyone who attended. Our Charolais association is making great strides and I invite anyone interested in Charolais to join us in promoting our breed. Thank you for all you do.

Mike Davis
President

I invite everyone to the Wilson County Fairgrounds in Lebanon, Tennessee on August 23, 2014. We will have the Tennessee Membership meeting and the Tennessee State Charolais Show. The show is on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Support the juniors and see some fine cattle.

Our association had a very successful Field Day on June 14. Performance Feeds served a very fine lunch, and we are thankful to them. The facilities at the Macon County Fairgrounds was a very good location. Kevin, Cindy and Haley Brazel worked very hard to make the field day a success, and I can't thank them enough. The auction went well. Several members provided items for the auction and we thank them so much.

The Turners and Brazels showed cattle and did a fine job. Haley Brazel showed the Grand Champion. We will get to see them again on August 23. I invite you to come to the fair and support our Charolais.

A letter will be sent to all members detailing the schedule for the meetings and show. The Board of Directors will meet at 5:00 p.m. with the Membership meeting to follow at 5:30 p.m. in the building behind the large showbarn.

Hope to see you there, and thanks again for supporting our breed and association.
